Authorities have confirmed that a former senior political secretary to Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, alongside a businessman entangled in a corruption scandal, will confront bribery charges this week.
Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin had stepped down as senior political secretary on Nov 25. He and businessman Albert Tei—who is involved in alleged corruption related to Sabah mining projects—are slated to be charged in Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with four counts each for receiving and offering bribes. Further charges are anticipated at Shah Alam Sessions Court the following day.
The two were arrested separately on Nov 28. Another figure, reported to be Shamsul’s proxy, Sofia Rini Buyong, has also been detained but is expected to act as a prosecution witness without facing charges. Authorities have gathered statements from 32 other witnesses involved in the investigation.
Investigators are concentrating on allegations brought forth through videos and media reports, including claims that Tei transferred RM629,000 (US$152,215) to Shamsul for personal expenditures like home renovations, cigars, and tailored clothing.
The issue has sparked significant attention right before the Sabah state election, raising fears regarding possible conflicts of interest and political favoritism. Tei purportedly stated that the funds were meant to garner political backing in Sabah, though specifics of the arrangement remain ambiguous.
Both Shamsul and Tei face additional charges related to allegations of issuing letters of support in government contracts. Further complicating matters, Tei has provided discreet video footage of purported bribe negotiations with Sabah state lawmakers, leading to accusations against himself and others, which they defend as being motivated by revenge.
Investigators are also looking into Tei’s attorney, who allegedly was not cooperative, while authorities have dismissed accusations of wrongdoing during Tei’s arrest, citing video evidence and official statements to back their actions.
As court proceedings begin in the coming days, they are expected to unfold further insights into the magnitude of the alleged corruption.
