A 16-year-old Chicago girl who publicly advocated for her father’s release from immigration detention has died after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Ofelia Giselle Torres Hidalgo passed away on Friday due to stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer. Her family confirmed her death in a statement, adding that funeral arrangements will remain private.
Diagnosed With Aggressive Cancer in 2024
Ofelia was diagnosed in December 2024 with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive cancer affecting soft tissues. She had been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment over the past year.
Despite her deteriorating health, she continued to support her father during his deportation case, even attending court proceedings virtually.
Father’s Deportation Case Nears Resolution
Just three days before her passing, an immigration judge in Chicago ruled that her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, was conditionally eligible for “cancellation of removal.” The decision offers him a pathway toward lawful permanent residency and potential US citizenship.
According to the family’s attorney, the judge recognised the hardship that deportation would cause his US-born children.
Ofelia joined the final hearing via Zoom, demonstrating resilience despite her condition.
Legal and Immigration Background
Torres Maldonado, a painter and home renovator, was detained on October 18 during a large-scale immigration enforcement operation known as “Operation Midway Blitz” in suburban Chicago.
His attorneys argued that his detention violated due process rights. A judge later ruled his detention unlawful and granted him a bond hearing. He was subsequently released on a $2,000 bond, with the court noting his lack of criminal history.
The Department of Homeland Security had alleged that Torres Maldonado had lived in the US without legal status since entering in 2003 and cited past driving-related offenses, including driving without a valid license and insurance.
A Teen’s Public Appeal
While undergoing treatment, Ofelia recorded a heartfelt message shared on a GoFundMe page created to support the family.
In the video, she described her father as a hardworking man dedicated to his family and expressed concern over immigrant families being targeted.
Her attorneys also informed the court that she had been released from the hospital just a day before her father’s arrest so she could spend time with loved ones. They argued that the stress of the situation disrupted her cancer treatment.
A Legacy of Courage
Family attorney Kalman Resnick described Ofelia as “heroic and brave” in the face of both illness and the legal challenges confronting her family.
Her passing has drawn attention to the human impact of immigration enforcement actions and the emotional toll such cases can have on families already facing medical crises.
Ofelia is survived by her parents and younger brother. Her story leaves behind a powerful message of resilience, courage, and unwavering love for family.
