China Alerts Japan on Taiwan Comments Impacting Trade Relations

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

China has expressed strong disapproval of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent comments concerning Taiwan, stating they are detrimental to the relationship between China and Japan and pose threats to economic collaboration.

Takaichi's remarks, which hinted at potential military involvement in the Taiwan Strait, have sparked significant backlash across China. Officials noted that these comments undermine the political foundation necessary for stable China-Japan relations and could adversely affect trade and economic exchanges.

During a press briefing on Thursday, He Yongqian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce, urged Japan to take a responsible approach, retract its statements, and adhere to its commitments to China. She warned, “If Japan persists with this erroneous approach, China will implement necessary steps, and Japan will face all ensuing consequences.”

In response to suggestions that China may halt the importation of Japanese aquatic products, the spokesperson indicated she had no confirmed information on such actions. Nevertheless, she pointed out the strong public discontent in China that has arisen from Takaichi’s remarks.

China stressed that Japan cannot damage Chinese sentiments while continuing to pursue economic advantages. “This is not the right way to engage with China,” the spokesperson urged, calling for Japan to amend its actions forthwith.

Takaichi's comments have stirred global attention, reviving concerns about regional militarism and escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait, a critical area for both regional stability and international trade.

The robust response from China underlines the heightened sensitivities surrounding Taiwan and the vital necessity of fostering stable diplomatic and economic ties between Beijing and Tokyo.
