In a significant move, Chinese authorities have taken into custody 18 prominent leaders of the Beijing Zion Church, marking one of the most substantial crackdowns on unregistered Christian groups in recent memory. The leaders had been held since early October as part of an extensive operation targeting underground churches throughout the nation.
Officials allege that the individuals face charges of “illegally utilizing information networks,” a serious accusation that could lead to sentences of up to three years behind bars. Advocacy groups contend that this charge is increasingly utilized to suppress Christian figures who resist the ruling party's oversight.
The crackdown commenced on October 9, when law enforcement in Beihai, Guangxi, executed a coordinated series of operations across multiple provinces. Within days, renowned pastor Mingri “Ezra” Jin, along with nearly 30 pastors, ministers, and church affiliates, were detained from locations including Shanghai, Zhejiang, Shandong, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan.
Several detainees underwent weeks of questioning, and at least four have since been released on bail. Additionally, a relative of one detainee faced interrogation. According to Chinese law, suspects cannot be held longer than 37 days without an official arrest, which has now been confirmed for the 18 church leaders.
Christian advocacy organizations assert that these arrests signify an escalating effort to eradicate independent churches that exist outside of state-sanctioned frameworks. They characterize the latest detentions as attempts to coerce churches into conforming to governmental control.
Pastor Jin, who established Zion Church in 2007, saw the congregation grow to nearly 5,000 members across about 50 cities. After authorities shut down the church’s physical location in 2018, it shifted to online operations. However, recent regulations have imposed restrictions on all online religious materials not sanctioned by the state.
Advocates for rights declare that the apprehended leaders were merely expressing their faith and nurturing an independent church community. International organizations have also expressed concern, calling for transparency and equitable treatment of those detained.
