More young Americans are pausing over the decision to become parents as climate anxiety rises, according to a 2024 Lancet report. The study, surveying people aged 16 to 25, found that 52% feel reluctant to have children, citing worries about the planet’s future and the environmental costs of raising another generation.
The issue goes beyond personal risk to include wider ethical concerns. "Some people think it’s a bad thing not to have a child," said 27-year-old Amanda Porretto. "I just don’t think I need to bring more people into the world when there’s so much here currently that we need to fix." Many in this age group are torn between wanting a family and the imperative to curb emissions.
Bioethicists warn that reproduction has a long-term emissions footprint. Johns Hopkins scholar Travis Rieder notes that choosing to have children adds a persistent carbon legacy because those children will generate emissions across their lifetimes. The imbalance is stark: on average, a US resident produces roughly 123 times the carbon emissions of someone in countries such as Ghana.
The trend is backed by additional research. A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that adults under 50 without children are about four times more likely to let climate concerns shape their family plans than older adults. Environmental organisations also highlight that starting a family remains among the most carbon-intensive personal decisions.
Still, experts including Rieder and Nandita Bajaj of Population Balance advise weighing emissions concerns against the social and emotional value of parenting. Many Americans are exploring compromises—smaller families, adoption or more sustainable household practices—to align parenthood with environmental responsibility.
This shift signals a generational change in priorities: for many young people, the choice is changing from simply "Should I have children?" to "How can I raise a family responsibly in a warming world?"
