In Australia and New Zealand, more than 70 schools were closed on Monday amid urgent cleaning and safety inspections triggered by the discovery of asbestos in children's play sand. This precautionary measure affected schools and preschools, raising significant concern among parents and educators alike.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a national recall notice on Wednesday, targeting several colorful play sand products supplied by Educational Colours after laboratory tests identified the presence of tremolite and chrysotile asbestos. These substances pose severe health risks, including lung issues and cancer, when inhaled.
The closures commenced last Friday in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) with one school in Brisbane. By Monday, the total number affected had surpassed 70 institutions. Authorities reiterated that this action was taken as a preventive measure to ensure children’s safety.
“Our primary concern is safety. We are collaborating with schools, suppliers, and health authorities to ensure all products are removed and school premises are thoroughly sanitized,” an ACCC spokesperson stated.
Many parents and teachers voiced their worries over the alarming discovery, with calls for enhanced oversight of children’s products. Social media has seen a surge of posts urging families to inspect their homes for potentially contaminated play sand purchased recently.
The recalled products, mainly marketed for preschool and early elementary play, have also led to recalls across various retail chains in these countries. Health officials have advised anyone who purchased these items to cease usage immediately and adhere to safe disposal instructions.
While no asbestos-related illnesses have been reported in connection with the play sand, experts caution about the potential long-term health effects, particularly on children, who are at the highest risk.
The ACCC remains vigilant in monitoring the situation and is collaborating with state and territory officials to ensure all schools are safe prior to reopening. Retailers have also been urged to assist in the recall efforts and ensure that any remaining stock is eliminated from distribution.
This incident highlights the need for thorough product testing and quality assurance, particularly for items meant for children. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding students' health while investigations are ongoing.
