A newly erected bridge, known as the Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan province, suffered a partial collapse on Tuesday, causing debris to plummet into a nearby river and enveloping the valley in dust. The shocking event was recorded on video and quickly shared across Chinese social media platforms, escalating concerns about infrastructure reliability in the area.
This 758-meter bridge was an essential part of a national highway linking central China to Tibet. Following the detection of cracks and minor ground movement, officials had closed the bridge on Monday for safety inspections. Just a day later, the structure fell into a gorge adjacent to the Shuangjiangku Hydropower Station in Maerkang.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries. Officials noted that the prompt closure and evacuation efforts likely averted a crisis. Initial inquiries indicate that geological issues in the surrounding steep mountains may have contributed significantly to the collapse.
Experts have been sent to the site for a detailed evaluation to ascertain if any design or construction flaws influenced the incident. A thorough safety audit of neighboring bridges and tunnels has also been launched.
The Hongqi Bridge, which was completed this year and opened to the public in September, soared about 625 meters above the gorge and was aimed at enhancing trade, tourism, and accessibility in the region.
Local sources reported that warning signs were observed during an inspection around 5:25 PM on Monday. Authorities acted swiftly to initiate an emergency response and clear the area before the bridge gave way at approximately 3:00 PM the next day.
Officials have not yet provided a timeline for reopening the affected section of the highway. Meanwhile, public concern is mounting over the quality assurance and monitoring processes in large infrastructure endeavors, particularly in districts vulnerable to landslides and seismic disturbances.
The collapse of the Hongqi Bridge has ignited renewed discussions about the resilience of newly constructed infrastructures in China, with many online voices demanding more transparency in construction methods and rigorous geological evaluations before any new infrastructure is opened to the public.
