Colombia booked the final spot in the FIFA World Cup last 16 with a 1-0 victory over Ghana on Friday at Arrowhead Stadium. An early goal from Jhon Arias proved enough to send the South American side into the knockout stage, where they will face Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday.
Despite controlling most of the match and creating several scoring opportunities, Colombia were unable to extend their lead. However, Ghana struggled throughout the game and failed to register a single shot on target.
Ghana showed early promise when midfielder Thomas Partey fired a powerful shot just wide of the post in the opening minute. However, that opportunity turned out to be their only major threat as Colombia quickly took control of the contest.
Both teams were forced into early substitutions because of injuries. Colombia replaced Jhon Cordoba after he appeared to suffer a groin injury, with Luis Suarez coming on. Shortly afterwards, Ghana brought on Alidu Seidu in place of the injured Marvin Senaya.
Colombia broke the deadlock in the 14th minute. Substitute Luis Suarez kept the ball alive on the right wing before delivering a cross into the penalty area, where an unmarked Jhon Arias calmly guided the ball into the net.

The goal left Ghana chasing the game, while Colombia continued to dominate possession and attack with confidence.
Colombia created several opportunities to score a second goal before the break. Bayern Munich forward Luis Diaz missed a clear chance in the 39th minute, sending his effort wide.
In first-half stoppage time, Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi produced an excellent save to deny Johan Mojica's header.
The first-half statistics reflected Colombia's dominance. Ghana failed to produce a shot on target and completed fewer than half the number of passes managed by Colombia, who recorded 319 completed passes before the interval.
Colombia continued to create chances after the restart but were unable to finish the game comfortably. Luis Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside before later hitting a shot straight at Lawrence Ati Zigi.
Juan Quintero also came close late in the match, firing a powerful effort wide of the target.
Although Colombia missed several opportunities to add to their lead, Arias' first-half goal was enough to secure victory against a Ghana side that finished the match without a single shot on target.
The win sends Colombia into the FIFA World Cup last 16 as the final team to qualify for the knockout stage. They will now face Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday after edging past Ghana with a disciplined performance and an early decisive goal.
