On Saturday, England displayed remarkable tenacity as Zak Crawley and Joe Root worked together to sustain their slim hopes in the Ashes, battling through a critical period while pursuing a daunting target of 435 runs against Australia in the third Test match.
By tea on the fourth day, England reached 106 for 2, with Crawley not out on 36 and Root on 37. The duo faced intense pressure, forming a crucial partnership after Ollie Pope was dismissed, marking the only wicket to fall in the second session.
To keep their series alive, England must secure a win, having endured heavy defeats in earlier matches in Perth and Brisbane. Meanwhile, Australia, comfortably holding the Ashes, require only a draw.
The challenge for England is unprecedented. No team has successfully chased down more than 316 runs at the Adelaide Oval, and only once has a target higher than 435 been achieved, with the West Indies' legendary 418-run chase in 2003.
Earlier in the match, England concluded Australia’s second innings at 349 just before lunch, taking six wickets during that session. Travis Head stole the spotlight with a substantial 170, while Alex Carey contributed 72, enhancing Australia's lead beyond reach.
England's innings started shakily. Ben Duckett fell early, edging a delivery from Pat Cummins to second slip, setting a challenging tone for the innings. Pope continued his disappointing series, dismissed for just 17 by a stunning one-handed catch from Marnus Labuschagne.
However, Crawley demonstrated remarkable discipline, playing cautiously and choosing his shots wisely as he faced 80 balls with minimal risk. Root mirrored his partner's patience, understanding that a significant innings is critical for England's improbable recovery.
Australia resumed play at 271 for 4, with Head and Carey quickly increasing their advantage against an England attack lacking sharpness. Head reached his 150 to a standing ovation before being dismissed, while Carey’s attempt for back-to-back centuries ended at leg slip.
England's bowlers found their rhythm late in the day, with Josh Tongue emerging as the standout performer, yet Australia had already set an enormous task for England.
As the final day approaches, the fate of England rests heavily on the shoulders of Crawley and Root to forge an extraordinary comeback.
