In Nepal, particularly in Bara district, a curfew has been imposed following renewed clashes between young Gen Z protesters and supporters of the former ruling party. This unrest comes in the wake of a deadly uprising in September that resulted in at least 76 fatalities.
The latest clashes erupted Wednesday in Simara, where demonstrations from Gen Z members faced off against counter-rallies from KP Sharma Oli’s Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML). Scuffles near Simara airport led authorities to prohibit public gatherings and enforce a curfew lasting until 8 pm local time on Thursday to restore order.
While the police reported that the situation was largely under control with no serious injuries, Prime Minister Sushila Karki called for calm, urging all factions to refrain from political provocation. She emphasized trusting the electoral process ahead of national elections on March 5, 2026.
The prime minister further instructed home and security agencies to ensure peace and facilitate the safe movement of political leaders. In a meeting with representatives from over 110 parties, she highlighted the necessity for visionary new leadership for the nation.
Gen Z protests first erupted in Nepal last September following a temporary government ban on social media, igniting widespread outrage. The demonstrations became violent, driven by public frustration regarding economic stagnation and corruption, which led to the ousting of four-time prime minister KP Sharma Oli. Throughout the unrest, significant damage occurred to government offices, courts, and parliament buildings.
The recent incidents in Bara district signify ongoing high tensions as Nepal approaches its upcoming elections. Authorities are vigilantly monitoring the situation to avert additional violence and uphold law and order.
