The Koh-i-Noor diamond has resurfaced in global discourse as Zohran Mamdani urged King Charles III to return this renowned gem to India. His comments have reignited the enduring debate surrounding ownership of this iconic diamond.
Known as the “Mountain of Light,” the Koh-i-Noor diamond is a stunning 105.6-carat gem with a rich history. Believed to have originated in the Golconda region of modern-day Telangana during the 13th century, it has been in the hands of various rulers including Mughal emperors, Persian kings, Afghan leaders, and Sikh monarchs over centuries.
Eventually, it was acquired by Maharaja Duleep Singh, the final ruler of the Sikh Empire. Following the British annexation of Punjab in 1849, the diamond was transferred to Queen Victoria as part of the Treaty of Lahore, and it has remained within the British Crown Jewels ever since.
Historically, the Koh-i-Noor diamond has adorned royal crowns of British queens and is currently housed at the Tower of London. Notably, it was not part of the recent coronation, where Queen Camilla chose a different crown.
India consistently asserts that the Koh-i-Noor diamond holds significant cultural and historical value. Many argue that its acquisition during the colonial era warrants its return. The Archaeological Survey of India has characterized the diamond's transfer as a “surrender” under contentious historical circumstances, adding to the ongoing debate.
With Mamdani's recent comments, discussions surrounding the Koh-i-Noor diamond are back in the spotlight. It symbolizes more than just a precious stone; it represents a narrative of history, heritage, and a persistent international dialogue.
