DEWA Expands Dubai Power Network With AED7.6 Billion Projects

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has shared new details about the authority’s work to improve electricity supply in Dubai. According to him, DEWA’s electricity transmission projects have now reached a total value of over AED7.6 billion. These large investments are helping the city meet the growing demand for power and support its future growth.

Four New Substations Completed in Early 2025

In the first six months of 2025, DEWA completed four important electricity substations. These are 132 kilovolt (kV) stations, and they add a total capacity of 450 megavolt-amperes (MVA) to Dubai’s power system. The cost of building these four stations was AED725 million. Along with the stations, DEWA also laid down 228 kilometers of power transmission cables to help connect these stations to the main grid.

More Substations Now Under Construction

DEWA is not stopping with just four new stations. Al Tayer said that they are currently building 49 more 132 kV substations. These stations are smaller than the main high-voltage stations but are still very important for delivering power to homes, businesses, and government buildings. In addition to the 132 kV stations, DEWA is also constructing two very large 400 kV substations. These larger stations are used for handling much bigger amounts of electricity.

New Tenders for Future Projects

To keep up with the future electricity needs of Dubai, DEWA plans to build even more substations. Over the next three years, DEWA will open new tenders, which means they will invite construction companies to bid on contracts for more work. The plan includes building 57 additional 132 kV substations and laying 160 kilometers of underground electricity cables. These future projects will further strengthen Dubai’s electricity network.

Areas That Will Benefit from New Power Stations

Hussain Lootah, who is the Executive Vice President of Transmission Power at DEWA, explained where the new stations will be located. He said that two of the stations are in Al Yalayis 5. These are being built to serve housing projects for local citizens. There are also new stations being built in Hatta and Warsan 4. These areas are growing and need better access to electricity for homes and businesses.

DEWA Now Has 391 Power Stations in Total

By the end of June 2025, DEWA had a total of 391 electricity transmission substations in operation. Out of these, 27 are the large 400 kV substations, and 364 are the smaller 132 kV ones. These stations are spread across Dubai and are used to transmit electricity to different neighborhoods, industries, and government buildings.

Millions of Working Hours Spent on Projects

Building so many power stations and laying long power cables takes a lot of effort. Lootah mentioned that more than 4.5 million working hours were needed to complete the work done so far. DEWA used modern digital tools and technologies approved by international standards to make sure the work was done safely, quickly, and with high quality.

Ten More Substations Approved for Construction

DEWA has recently awarded contracts to build ten more 132 kV substations. These stations will be built in various important areas of Dubai. Some of the locations include Al Barsha South 2, Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Airport City, Nad Al Sheba 1, and Wadi Al Safa 5. The cost for building these ten stations will be AED1.1 billion. These areas have growing populations and businesses, so they need better electricity supply.

Power Cables to Connect New Substations

To make sure the new substations are connected to the rest of Dubai’s electricity system, DEWA is also laying down new power cables. The total length of these cables will be 60.6 kilometers. The cost of this cable project is AED288 million. These cables are important because they carry electricity from the main power stations to smaller substations and finally to homes and businesses.

Dubai's Power Network Grows Stronger

With all these new projects, DEWA is making sure that Dubai’s electricity system is ready for the future. As the city grows and more people live and work there, the demand for electricity will continue to rise. By investing billions of dirhams into new stations and power cables, DEWA is helping to build a strong and reliable electricity network for everyone in the city.

Commitment to Innovation and Development

DEWA is also focusing on using smart and digital technology in all of its projects. This means using advanced systems to monitor and manage electricity use, reduce energy loss, and improve performance. This modern approach not only saves money but also helps reduce the environmental impact of energy production and use.

Supporting Dubai’s Future Plans

The new power projects are part of Dubai’s larger development goals. Dubai wants to be a leading city when it comes to infrastructure, technology, and sustainable growth. Reliable electricity is key to achieving these goals. Whether it’s for housing, business, transport, or public services, DEWA’s work will help keep the city running smoothly.

Powering Dubai's Progress

DEWA’s efforts to build new electricity substations and power cables are a big step forward for Dubai. These projects, worth over AED7.6 billion, show the city’s strong commitment to planning for the future. With more stations, modern equipment, and careful management, DEWA is making sure that Dubai will have the power it needs to grow and succeed.
