India and China Resume Direct Flights After a Five-Year Hiatus

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Following a hiatus of over four years, India and China have restarted direct flights, re-establishing connections between the nations with a daily non-stop service from Kolkata to Guangzhou. The inaugural IndiGo A320 Neo flight departed Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 10 PM on Sunday, accommodating 176 passengers.

This newly reinstated India-China route serves as a significant advancement in regional connectivity, previously stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and tensions along the border, which led to service suspensions in early 2020. The revival of these flights signals improving diplomatic relations and a desire to foster cooperation and cultural exchange.

An official ceremony marked the occasion at the airport, where a lamp-lighting signified the renewed bond between India and China. Stakeholders from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and IndiGo Airlines attended, underscoring the importance of this development.

P.R. Beuria, the Airport Director, stated that the resumption of direct flights would bolster tourism and business while enhancing convenience for travelers on both ends. He pointed out that this route would enhance Kolkata’s status as a vital international aviation hub in eastern India.

The direct flight from Kolkata to Guangzhou now operates every day, symbolizing a robust recovery and partnership as the skies open up between two of Asia’s most vibrant nations.
