Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed 13 cycling tracks as part of its ambitious master plan to enhance sustainable mobility across the emirate. The completed network spans a total of 162 kilometres and forms a key component of a larger plan that includes 15 cycling routes.
The newly developed tracks create a seamless and integrated cycling network connecting major areas such as Al Khawaneej to Al Mamzar Beach, Al Warqa’a to Saih Al Salam, and Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) to Jumeirah. This initiative aims to improve accessibility and encourage cycling as a practical mode of daily transport.
In addition to the tracks, RTA is progressing with the construction of several pedestrian and cycling bridges, expected to be among the largest in Dubai. These bridges will enhance connectivity across major highways, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Dubai–Al Ain Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Al Khail Road. All projects are scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2026.
This development is part of Dubai’s long-term vision to expand its cycling infrastructure to 1,000 kilometres by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable urban mobility.
Dubai’s efforts have already gained global recognition. The city was ranked among the world’s top 100 cycling-friendly cities in the 2025 Copenhagenize Index, becoming the first city in the Middle East to achieve this milestone.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, the expansion reflects the leadership’s vision to improve road safety and provide a sustainable, people-friendly transport environment. He highlighted that the integrated cycling network connects residential communities with key destinations and public transport hubs, promoting first- and last-mile connectivity.
The selection of cycling track locations was based on detailed studies, considering factors such as population density, land use, proximity to tourist destinations, and access to transport stations. These efforts aim to ensure smooth traffic flow and safe mobility for all road users.
RTA’s initiatives have significantly boosted cycling adoption in Dubai. The total length of cycling tracks increased from 560 km in 2024 to 636 km in 2025, while cycling trips rose by 23.5%, reaching 57.3 million journeys. Additionally, 22.3% of Dubai’s population now has access to cycling infrastructure, with user satisfaction levels reaching 85%.
Recent projects include cycling tracks in Al Khawaneej 2 and Al Barsha 2, covering 18.5 km, as well as a 700-metre track in the Tolerance District. The Soft Mobility Project further improved connectivity around key areas such as Al Souk Al Kabeer, Hor Al Anz, and Abu Hail, along with major public transport stations including BurJuman, Sharaf DG, Palm Deira, Baniyas, and Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall.
Additional developments feature 25 km of dedicated cycling and e-scooter tracks, upgraded pedestrian pathways, and the implementation of the Safe Streets concept. A 7 km micromobility network has also been completed, linking ONPASSIVE Metro Station with Al Quoz Bus Station, along with a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over Al Manara Street.
The infrastructure expansion also includes 11 km of cycling tracks at Al Warqa’a entrances and approximately 10 km developed under the Al Shindagha Corridor Project.
With these developments, Dubai continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in sustainable mobility, promoting healthier lifestyles and environmentally friendly transportation options for residents and visitors alike.
