Dubai has reached a significant milestone in its mobility journey as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Joby Aviation, celebrated the successful completion of the first crewed electric air taxi flight within the UAE. The aircraft took off from the Dubai Jetman Helipad located in Margham, landing 17 minutes later at Al Maktoum International Airport during the Dubai Airshow 2025, signifying a groundbreaking eVTOL journey in the nation.
This flight fuels Dubai’s aim to roll out commercial aerial taxis by 2026. The RTA also announced that construction is well underway for the world's first dedicated air taxi vertiport near Dubai International Airport, now over 60% complete. Developed by the UK-based Skyports Infrastructure, this multi-level facility has reached its structural zenith and is designed to facilitate thousands of landings per year when operational.
To bolster the upcoming network, RTA has teamed up with Emaar Properties, Atlantis The Royal, and Wasl Asset Management Group. Their respective developments will feature several additional vertiports strategically located in high-traffic areas, establishing the initial route map for service. Proposed locations include Zabeel Dubai Mall, Palm Jumeirah at Atlantis The Royal, and Dubai Marina close to the American University in Dubai, enabling swift connections among airports, business hubs, and major tourist attractions.
Joby’s eVTOL is designed for rapid urban commutes with its vertical take-off and landing capacity. It is equipped with six rotors and four battery packs, reaching speeds of up to 320 km/h with a range of approximately 160 km. Engineered for quieter operations than conventional helicopters, the aircraft accommodates four passengers alongside a pilot and occupies minimal ground space during take-off and landing.
The recent flight forms part of Joby’s ongoing test program in Dubai. Previous trials in Margham have assessed the aircraft’s performance under local weather and airspace scenarios, paving the way for more extensive operations as the anticipated 2026 launch approaches.
Skyports’ primary vertiport near DXB spans around 3,100 square metres across four floors, incorporating parking decks, charging zones, take-off areas, and fully climate-controlled passenger amenities. It is being built to meet the highest international safety standards and is projected to manage around 42,000 landings annually, serving nearly 170,000 travelers.
With robust agreements secured, infrastructure developments in progress, and test flights on the rise, Dubai is poised to be the first city globally to implement a comprehensive urban aerial mobility system. The new service aims to significantly reduce travel time—such as the trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah in just about 10 minutes—providing a quick, efficient, and sustainable transport alternative for both residents and visitors upon the official launch in 2026.
