Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is one of the most important festivals in India. It is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil. Different regions of India celebrate it in different ways, but the main idea remains the same — the triumph of truth and righteousness.
In North India, Dussehra is linked to the story of Lord Rama and the demon king Ravana. According to the Ramayana, Ravana kidnapped Lord Rama’s wife, Sita. Lord Rama, with the help of his brother Lakshman and devotee Hanuman, defeated Ravana after a long battle. People celebrate this day by burning large effigies of Ravana, symbolizing the destruction of evil. The burning of Ravana also teaches the lesson that no matter how powerful evil may seem, truth and goodness will always win in the end.
In West Bengal and other eastern states, Dussehra is celebrated as the last day of Durga Puja. Here, it marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Huge idols of Goddess Durga are worshiped for nine days, and on the tenth day, they are immersed in rivers or lakes. This shows the goddess returning to her divine home after destroying evil forces on Earth. People gather in pandals, enjoy cultural programs, and share festive meals with family and friends.
In South India, the festival is celebrated as Vijayadashami. It is considered an auspicious day to start new ventures, education, or learning new skills. Children are often taught their first letters on this day in a ceremony called “Vidyarambham.” In Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, families display dolls and figurines in a tradition called “Bommai Golu” or “Bommala Koluvu,” which also represents the victory of good over evil.
Even though the customs and stories differ across regions, the festival brings families and communities together. It reminds people of important life lessons: courage, righteousness, respect, and the value of truth. Colorful processions, music, dance, and food make the festival joyful, while the stories behind the celebrations provide moral guidance.
