EU Mobilizes for Hantavirus Response Aboard Cruise Ship

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The European Commission is actively coordinating efforts with national authorities from various EU member states in response to the Hantavirus outbreak associated with the MV Hondius cruise ship.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has evaluated the risk level for the public across Europe as “very low.” They noted that effective infection control measures are in place, ensuring that hantaviruses are not easily transmitted between individuals.

Emergency coordination by the European Union commenced after Spain triggered the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on May 6, enabling the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre to assist with the safe evacuation of passengers from the cruise ship, which was located off the coast of Tenerife Island.

On May 10, five flights for repatriation, coordinated by France, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece, and Ireland, successfully departed. The Netherlands is currently managing a sixth and final repatriation flight.

To enhance the initiative, the European Union has also allocated resources from its strategic reserves, including a medical evacuation aircraft from Norway’s EU fleet. Additional logistical services, transport support, and protective gear are prepared to be deployed if necessary.

A liaison officer from the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre has arrived in Tenerife to support local coordination efforts. Furthermore, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has dispatched two experts aboard the cruise ship prior to passenger disembarkation.

The EU is ensuring a cohesive health response in collaboration with Spain, EU member nations, participants of the Civil Protection Mechanism, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and G7 countries.

The Commission highlighted that the Health Security Committee, overseen by the European Commission, is engaging with national health authorities to ensure coordinated actions surrounding passenger disembarkation, repatriation, and health follow-ups.

Officials are convening daily through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and the Health Security Committee to assess the situation in real-time, share developments, monitor potential cases, and refine operational strategies as needed.

The European Commission emphasizes its foremost goal is the protection of citizens, support for impacted passengers, and prompt, effective response actions by member states grounded in the most current medical data.
