Eminent Indian space pioneer Dr. E.V. Chitnis passed away at the age of 100 in Pune on Wednesday morning after suffering a heart attack. As a trailblazer in India’s early space initiatives, Dr. Chitnis significantly influenced the country’s advancements in space exploration. Born on July 25, 1925, he was part of the initial wave of Indian scientists collaborating with Vikram Sarabhai, contributing to the establishment of what is now known as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). His departure signifies the conclusion of an era in Indian space science, yet his influence on the Indian space programme will resonate for generations.
Dr. Chitnis was pivotal in selecting Thumba, Kerala, as the launch site for India's first rocket, recognizing its strategic location in the early 1960s. As a vital member in the transition of INCOSPAR into ISRO, he was instrumental in launching crucial initiatives like the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT), which made television and telecommunication accessible to rural areas. His work in remote sensing, space communication, and policy formulation established him as a foundational figure in India’s space programme, propelling its scientific advancement for decades.
Between 1981 and 1985, Dr. Chitnis served as the second director of ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad, leading the development of satellite applications across communication, meteorology, and education. His significant contributions earned him national recognition, including the Padma Bhushan in 1985, highlighting his influential role in India's space exploration and scientific achievements. He also played a critical mentoring role, having reviewed A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s résumé in 1962 and endorsing him for NASA training, which significantly shaped India's aerospace ambitions.
After retiring in 1989, Dr. Chitnis remained deeply engaged in academia and science communication. Establishing the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC) at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SSPU), he dedicated over two decades to enhancing science education via media and communication. His commitment to the Indian space programme and educational outreach motivated numerous students and researchers, embodying his vision that the benefits of space technology should permeate across the nation.
This year, Dr. Chitnis celebrated his 100th birthday with a centenary conference organized by IISER Pune and the National Centre for Science Communicators (NCSC), Mumbai. The event highlighted his contributions to science, space policy, and innovation, attracting both senior ISRO scientists and young talent. Astrophysicist Ajit Kembhavi remarked on Dr. Chitnis's exceptional gift for identifying and fostering talent, stating that his legacy continues to shape the Indian space programme presently.
In addition to his scientific endeavors, Dr. Chitnis significantly enhanced science journalism, holding the presidency of the Press Trust of India for nearly thirty years, thus bolstering public understanding and communication of science in India. His son, Chetan Eknath Chitnis, a renowned molecular biologist and Padma Shri awardee in 2023, carries forward his father's commitment to scientific excellence. Dr. Chitnis leaves behind an extraordinary legacy within the Indian space programme, inspiring current and future generations of scientists to explore, innovate, and extend India’s reach in space.
