A violent explosion occurred near Chaman Phatak railway station in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, Pakistan, leaving at least 20 people injured. The blast caused extensive damage to trains, vehicles, and surrounding buildings. Emergency services and security personnel arrived quickly at the scene, initiating rescue efforts that lasted several hours.
Local police and rescue workers reported that the explosion happened while a train was in the area. The force of the blast caused significant damage, partially derailing several train coaches and damaging the locomotive. Witnesses noted that two train coaches flipped over due to the explosion's power, with shattered windows and damaged glass panels affecting nearby structures, while approximately 10 parked cars were also impacted.
In response to the incident, authorities declared a state of emergency in major hospitals throughout Quetta. Medical personnel were mobilized to treat both injured passengers and local civilians. Some victims remain in critical condition and are under urgent medical attention.
As a precaution, railway authorities temporarily halted the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express at Quetta Railway Station. Security teams cordoned off the blast zone, beginning searches for explosive materials or other threats in the vicinity. Bomb disposal units and forensic teams were dispatched to investigate the incident and gather evidence.
Preliminary reports hinted that the explosion could have been a suicide attack targeting a train carrying security personnel and their families. The banned group Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) later took responsibility for the attack, although investigations are ongoing to verify these claims. Officials indicated that the attack seemed aimed at railway infrastructure and security movements in the region.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the bombing, characterizing it as a cowardly act of terrorism. He emphasized that such incidents would not diminish Pakistan's resolve against extremist acts. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences and directed authorities to ensure adequate medical care for the injured.
Balochistan has witnessed a rise in militant activities lately, with separatist groups targetting railway lines, security personnel, government infrastructure, and projects in the region. Security experts highlight that this escalating violence puts additional strain on Pakistan’s security forces, particularly in border areas with Afghanistan and Iran. The recent explosion has reignited worries regarding public safety and railway security in this volatile province.
