The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States has raised alarms concerning the safety of airlines operating in Venezuelan airspace, citing an uptick in military actions and the deteriorating security climate in the region. Issued on Friday, this advisory prompts pilots and airlines to take additional precautions, though it stops short of prohibiting flights over Venezuela.
This warning comes on the heels of a notable increase in US military assets near Venezuela, featuring advanced aircraft carriers, warships, F-35 stealth fighters, and thousands of troops. US officials have stated that this military positioning aims to combat drug trafficking networks across Latin America.
Since September, Venezuela has executed several large-scale military drills and mobilized thousands of its military and reserves. The FAA has observed a rise in interference with the global navigation satellite systems within Venezuelan airspace, posing potential risks to flight navigation. Nevertheless, Venezuelan officials have not suggested any plans to target civilian aircraft.
The FAA highlights that caution should be exercised during all flight operations in Venezuelan airspace, including overflights and airport activities. US airlines operating over Venezuela while en route to South American destinations are now required to notify the FAA 72 hours in advance. Some carriers, like American Airlines, have preemptively ceased flights over this airspace.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has denounced the American military buildup, labeling it a possible pretext for his removal from office. Concurrently, US forces have allegedly targeted vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, reportedly killing over 80 individuals linked to drug trafficking, although no public evidence has been disclosed.
Direct flights between the US and Venezuela have been on hold since 2019. The FAA indicated it will continue monitoring the regional security dynamics and will update guidance for civil aviation accordingly.
This advisory underscores the escalating tensions between Washington and Caracas as military activities ramp up and concerns about airline safety in Venezuelan airspace mount.
