Engine Failure Leads to Fatal Cargo Plane Accident in Hong Kong

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A Turkish cargo aircraft skidded off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport last month, tragically resulting in the deaths of two airport employees. An initial investigation revealed that one of its four engines experienced an unexpected surge of power immediately after landing.

The report issued by Hong Kong's Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) detailed that the flight from Dubai, managed by ACT Airlines for Emirates, operated normally until shortly after it touched down. This sudden engine acceleration is believed to have caused the aircraft to veer from the runway.

The unfortunate incident raised serious safety concerns regarding cargo flights at one of the world’s busiest airports, as emergency responders quickly arrived at the site where the fully loaded plane slid across the tarmac, narrowly missing other active areas.

Investigators from the AAIA are currently analyzing flight data recorders, pilot communications, and maintenance logs to establish the exact circumstances of the runway excursion. Initial findings suggest a possible technical failure in one of the engines, although the agency has cautioned that further investigation is necessary to confirm the cause.

ACT Airlines and Emirates expressed their condolences to the victims' families, affirming their commitment to cooperate fully with the AAIA and to reassess safety measures to avert similar tragedies.

AAIA Chairperson Elaine Wong noted, “This initial report underscores the imperative for rigorous checks and monitoring of aircraft engines, particularly during landing when the aircraft is most susceptible to issues.” She emphasized that enhancing safety standards is paramount for the aviation sector following this incident.

Hong Kong International Airport has witnessed a significant rise in cargo flights, acting as a vital global connector between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Safety experts have voiced concerns that increased operational demand and reliance on aging aircraft models could heighten the risk of such accidents.

The AAIA report arrives as oversight intensifies on airport operations and cargo handling protocols. While runway excursions are infrequent, they can lead to substantial financial repercussions, operational delays, and potential loss of life.

Further details will be provided once the AAIA completes its comprehensive investigation, which will encompass an evalutation of engine performance, pilot actions, and ground safety practices. Authorities announced that the runway has since reopened for regular use after a thorough inspection and clearance.
