Overnight, Russian military forces launched deadly strikes in Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals and hitting key energy facilities while peace discussions are ongoing. In the northeastern Kharkiv area, a drone targeted a passenger train carrying around 200 individuals, claiming at least five lives. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko publicly condemned the strike on social media, with President Volodymyr Zelensky labeling the killings of civilians as "inexcusable."
Photos depicted the remains of the burned train carriage, as emergency services reported that the flames were contained. In the southern city of Odesa, over 50 Russian drones attacked, resulting in three fatalities and injuring more than 30, including a pregnant woman and two children. Odesa, a critical port for Ukraine's exports, has been subjected to persistent assaults.
President Zelensky has urged global allies to intensify pressure on Moscow, warning that these attacks jeopardize ongoing diplomatic initiatives. Recent US-mediated peace discussions in the UAE have sparked hopes for ending nearly four years of conflict, with the next meeting slated for February 1.
Furthermore, Russian drone and missile strikes have caused significant damage to residential structures, schools, and places of worship across Ukraine. Civilians have been killed in eastern Donetsk and the southern regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. These assaults have left millions without electricity during the harsh winter months.
The Ukrainian air force reported 165 drone attacks during the night, including a strike on a facility in the western Lviv region. The state gas company, Naftogaz, confirmed that one of its facilities was set ablaze in western Ukraine, marking the fifth instance of energy infrastructure being attacked this month.
Meanwhile, Russian troops have reportedly made slight gains, capturing two additional villages in the Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions according to the Russian defense ministry.
As the conflict enters its fourth year, tensions remain high with substantial casualties on both sides, and civilians remain trapped in the conflict. The international community is observing closely, hoping that diplomacy can take precedence before further loss of life occurs.
