A tragic suicide bombing occurred near Quetta in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, resulting in the death of at least 24 individuals and injuring over 70, according to reports from local authorities and emergency teams. The bomb exploded near the Chaman Phatak railway crossing while a passenger train transporting security personnel and their families was in transit. Eyewitness reports indicate that the blast caused severe damage, derailing train cars and instilling fear among those aboard and in nearby areas.
Local police and railway representatives noted that the attacker used a vehicle loaded with explosives, detonating it adjacent to the moving train. The force of the blast led to multiple train cars being derailed and at least two caught alight. Thick, black smoke rose from the wreckage as rescue teams and locals rushed to assist those trapped inside. Social media platforms buzzed with videos depicting scenes of chaos, damaged railway infrastructure, and emergency responders carrying victims away.
Among the casualties, many were identified as security personnel and their families who were commuting ahead of the Eid festivities. Civilians living near the train tracks also suffered injuries as the explosion damaged surrounding homes, shops, and parked vehicles. Hospitals across Quetta were placed on high alert, with medical staff summoned to aid in treating the sheer number of casualties, some of whom were reportedly in critical condition.
The banned militant organization Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was aimed at security personnel aboard the train. Pakistani officials indicated that the incident was a suicide attack, though investigations are ongoing to clarify all aspects relating to the bomber and any supporting networks involved. Following the explosion, security forces cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the attack as a “cowardly act of terrorism,” while President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences and necessitated that the best medical care be provided to the victims. Authorities reiterated a commitment to sustain counteroffensive operations against militant and separatist factions contributing to the violence plaguing the nation.
Balochistan, the largest province of Pakistan, has been no stranger to insurgency and militant acts. For years, separatist groups in the area have routinely attacked security forces, train systems, government facilities, and vital infrastructure projects. Experts highlight a troubling uptick in violence within the region, which poses concerns about public safety and stability. This latest bombing is deemed one of the most lethal attacks on the railway system in Pakistan in recent history.
