The Federal Bureau of Investigation has stepped up internal personnel moves, removing further agents and supervisors connected with the probe into former President Donald Trump’s attempts to challenge the 2020 election results.
Those affected reportedly received notices of dismissal earlier in the week, then saw the process briefly paused after objections from senior federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C. The separations were later carried out again; officials have not explained the sudden back-and-forth, and the total number of departures remains undisclosed.
The reassignments form part of a broader reorganization under FBI Director Kash Patel, who has pushed out several senior officials and field agents involved in inquiries or actions viewed as critical of the prior administration. In a related development, three former senior FBI leaders have sued Patel, accusing him of politically motivated interference and retributive conduct.
The FBI Agents Association has criticized the ongoing dismissals as disorderly and unpredictable, arguing that agents conducting lawful investigations should not face summary removal. The group pointed to cases of firing, temporary reinstatement and renewed dismissal as signs of internal confusion.
The personnel shake-up comes while the 2020 election probe remains under intense scrutiny; the inquiry ultimately led to an indictment by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Republican lawmakers have increasingly alleged politicization within the Justice Department, and have released FBI materials that include analyses of phone records tied to several GOP legislators.
Officials say agents and senior staff have also been removed for a variety of other reasons, including resistance to perceived political pressure, involvement in public protests, or scrutiny over past bureau actions. These moves are contributing to lower morale and mounting concerns about institutional stability.
Spokespeople for Director Patel and the D.C. U.S. Attorney declined to provide comment on the recent dismissals. Analysts warn the continued upheaval could have lasting effects on the bureau’s functioning, public credibility and internal cohesion.
