FBI Investigates Motive Behind Guardsmen Shooting Near White House

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A distressing incident unfolded just blocks away from the White House on Thanksgiving eve, where two National Guard soldiers were critically injured. An investigation led by the FBI and its joint terrorism task force seeks to uncover the motive of an Afghan immigrant who reportedly executed the attack in an 'ambush-style' manner. This event has ignited intense political discourse and heightened scrutiny over the nation’s immigration policies amidst fears of escalating tensions.

The attack occurred around midday outside a bustling subway station in Washington, D.C., a location frequented by tourists, office workers, and shoppers, amplifying the shock of the incident. Law enforcement officials stated the two soldiers were executing a security patrol reinstated months ago by President Donald Trump. As they stood near the station's entrance, a suspect unexpectedly approached and opened fire without any prior indication.

Both soldiers, affiliated with the West Virginia National Guard, sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Other Guard members nearby promptly responded, engaging in a shootout with the assailant, who was apprehended at the scene with injuries.

The shooter, later identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, came to the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, aimed at aiding Afghans who assisted U.S. forces during the Afghanistan conflict. A relative disclosed to NBC News that Lakanwal had served for a decade in the Afghan army and collaborated with American Special Forces.

Authorities confirmed that Lakanwal did not have a criminal history in the U.S. He filed for asylum in late 2024, which was approved earlier this year. At the time of the incident, he resided in Washington state and was employed by Amazon.

In a precautionary measure, the Secret Service temporarily enforced a security lockdown of the White House following the shooting. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that President Trump had requested an increase of 500 National Guard troops for enhanced security in the capital.

The incident incited a swift and vigorous political response. President Trump, speaking from Florida, termed the shooting as “an act of evil, hatred, and terror” in a video message, declaring that his administration would reevaluate all Afghan migrants allowed entry under President Biden.

In the wake of the President's remarks, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services revealed a halt to processing all Afghan-related immigration applications until further evaluation of security measures.

Vice President JD Vance added that the attack substantiates the need for tighter immigration controls, advocating aggressive deportations for individuals deemed ineligible to stay.

In contrast, critics argue the Trump administration is exploiting the tragedy to enforce severe immigration policies. Numerous community and civil rights organizations have voiced concerns that innocents might suffer due to broad actions taken without substantiated evidence.

The shooting emerged amid a tumultuous atmosphere in Washington, notably five days after a federal judge ruled that National Guard troops could not engage in law enforcement duties in the city without approval from the mayor. This ruling was delayed as the Trump administration prepared an appeal. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, historically opposed to the Guard’s presence, labeled the shooting a “targeted attack” and reiterated her apprehensions regarding federal forces in urban areas.

Authorities have emphasized that the suspect appeared to act independently, noting no immediate broader threat to the public has been detected. Nevertheless, the incident elevates substantial discourse surrounding security, immigration policies, and the deployment of military forces within U.S. urban locales.

This incident adds to the rising number of cities where President Trump has deployed National Guard troops, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, and Memphis. Local officials in these areas have criticized the administration’s approach as a tactic to intimidate communities and exert political pressure.

As the FBI's inquiries progress, many Americans await clarity regarding the shooter’s motivations and the broader implications this shooting might have on national security and immigration policies. For now, the families of the injured soldiers, alongside the residents of Washington, D.C., seek healing, understanding, and serenity following this violent and unsettling holiday season.
