Indonesian Specialist Educates Saudi Artisans on Batik at Banan Event

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

At the Saudi International Handicrafts Week “Banan,” organized by the Heritage Commission, Indonesian expert Feni exhibited her extensive knowledge in batik and textile arts. This event, hosted at the Indonesian pavilion, acted as a pivotal point for cultural exchange and skill sharing between Indonesian and Saudi artisans. Feni emphasized practical learning with her insights into traditional and contemporary batik-making techniques, focusing on teaching rather than merely showcasing finished artworks.

Her visit aims to bridge the cultural divide and foster artistic knowledge exchange between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. With a rich career that has taken her to over 100 countries to teach batik techniques, Feni underscored the global relevance and cultural importance of this time-honored art. She expressed that imparting her technical expertise allows Saudi artisans to integrate and refine these methods in their practices, thereby ensuring the art form's ongoing evolution and prosperity.

Reflecting on her previous involvement in the Banan exhibition, Feni recalled how the Indonesian delegation presented UNESCO-recognized batik as an element of intangible cultural heritage. She explained the complex nature of batik, revealing that crafting a single piece can require up to ten months. This meticulous process involves specialized tools, where each step is executed by hand, showcasing the artistry and patience essential to this craft.

During the event, Feni focused on the copper stamp printing technique, enabling artisans to replicate batik patterns akin to traditional Indonesian designs. This method involves stamping designs onto fabric followed by dyeing, providing Saudi artisans with a practical learning approach that bypasses the time-intensive hand-drawing methods. Thus, this technique bridges traditional artistry and modern production methods, encouraging broader adoption while preserving the essence of Indonesian batik.

Her workshops highlighted the significance of mastering each stage of batik creation, from wax preparation to dye application and final fabric treatment. Feni motivated Saudi artisans to experiment with colors and patterns while honoring the art's cultural heritage. Her involvement also highlighted the importance of international collaboration in safeguarding and promoting heritage crafts, fostering creative exchanges between countries.

Beyond the technical aspects, Feni discussed the cultural importance of batik in Indonesia, emphasizing how it conveys history, societal values, and narratives through its intricate designs. By educating Saudi artisans, she aims to promote cross-cultural appreciation for batik’s craftsmanship, encouraging innovation and adaptation within new frameworks.

Feni’s participation at Banan showcased not just Indonesian batik but also a commitment to knowledge sharing and fostering international collaborations in the realm of traditional arts. Her efforts at the pavilion were warmly welcomed, motivating Saudi artisans to delve into batik techniques and integrate these new skills into their craft.
