First Nations Endorse Oil Tanker Ban, Dismiss Pipeline Proposals

Post by : Meena Hassan

British Columbia’s Energy Minister, Adrian Dix, affirmed that the unanimous decision by chiefs at the Assembly of First Nations in Ottawa to uphold the oil tanker ban reinforces the provincial viewpoint that preferable alternatives exist rather than a northern coast pipeline.

Leaders from more than 600 First Nations appealed to Ottawa to sustain the tanker ban off B.C.’s northern coastline and to retract the recently established memorandum of understanding between the federal and Alberta governments.

Dix indicated that the assembly’s decision mirrors the longstanding stance of First Nations. He criticized the memorandum, highlighting that it was signed in the absence of a project, a proponent, or any realistic potential for progression. He also raised doubts regarding the economic viability of constructing a new northern pipeline while noting that proposals for a southern pipeline are not receiving serious attention.

The minister remarked that enhancing existing pipelines is much more economically sensible than building new ones, and B.C. remains receptive to talks with Alberta about increasing current oil shipping capacity.

Marilyn Slett, president of the Coastal First Nations, expressed appreciation for the assembly’s backing, stating that the protection of B.C.’s northern coast is non-negotiable and should be upheld by the federal government.

Both Slett and Premier David Eby emphasized that any federal approval for a northern pipeline would necessitate the consent of the impacted First Nations, particularly since revoking the tanker ban would be essential for the project's advancement. Eby referred to the pipeline proposal as a diversion from current energy efforts, cautioning that it could deplete limited governmental resources.
