Fisherman Loses Life After Incident at Donegal Coast

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A fisherman in his 40s tragically lost his life off the coast of County Donegal after he fell overboard from a vessel near Arranmore on Tuesday afternoon. The accident happened around 13:25 local time, prompting swift action from local officials.

The individual, originally from outside Ireland but residing in Greencastle, Inishowen for several years, was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital. Despite receiving immediate medical assistance, he was declared dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

The Coast Guard's marine rescue coordination centre in Malin swiftly responded to a mayday alert from the fishing boat. The crew successfully retrieved the man from the water and arranged for his transportation via air ambulance.

Authorities confirmed a technical inspection of the vessel has taken place. Both the Marine Casualty Investigation Board and the Health and Safety Authority have been alerted and are set to carry out a thorough investigation into the tragic event.

The Department of Transport has expressed its condolences while underscoring the vital need for safety measures for those in the maritime sector. This incident has also sparked renewed discussions on enhancing safety protocols for fishermen navigating the difficult waters off the Irish coastline.

This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the daily risks fishermen encounter, especially in rough and offshore conditions.
