France made an excellent start in their Davis Cup 2025 qualifying tie against Croatia, taking a 2-0 lead after the first day of matches in Osijek. Debutant Corentin Moutet gave the 10-time champion France an ideal start by defeating Croatia’s Dino Prizmic 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
Following Moutet’s win, Arthur Rinderknech, world number 57, topped Marin Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open winner, 6-4, 6-4. With this lead, France only needs to win one of the three remaining rubbers on Saturday to secure a spot in the Final 8. The first match on the second day will be a doubles game, followed by the remaining singles if required.
Netherlands Faces Challenge Against Argentina
In Groningen, the Netherlands began their qualifier against Argentina with difficulties. Last year, the Dutch reached the Davis Cup final but lost to Italy. On Friday, the Netherlands lost both singles matches and now face an uphill task to stay in the competition.
Jesper De Jong was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Tomas Etcheverry. Later, Argentina’s world number 21 Francisco Cerundolo beat Botic van de Zandschulp 7-6(1), 6-1. Dutch captain Paul Haarhuis acknowledged the challenge, saying, “We can’t afford any bad matches tomorrow. It’s a deep hole we’re in, but we still have a chance.”
Austria Shows Promise in Hungary
Austria also started well in Debrecen, Hungary, taking a 2-0 lead over the hosts. Jurij Rodionov, ranked 158th, stunned 56th-ranked Fabian Marozsan with a 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5 victory. Lukas Neumayer, another Austrian player outside the top 50, defeated Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7).
Austria’s strong start gives them a good opportunity to qualify for the Davis Cup Final 8 if they maintain their form in Saturday’s matches.
Germany Ahead Against Japan
Germany took a strong lead against Japan in Tokyo. Jan-Lennard Struff, who recently reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open, gave Germany the advantage with a three-set win against Yoshihito Nishioka. Yannick Hanfmann also added to Germany’s lead by beating Shintaro Mochizuki.
These results put Germany in a favorable position to secure a spot in the Final 8 with one more win on the second day of the tie.
United States Ties With Czech Republic
In Delray Beach, the United States played a close tie against the Czech Republic. Jiri Lehecka had initially given the Czech team the lead by defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-2. However, United States number one Taylor Fritz evened the tie at 1-1 by beating Czech’s Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3.
Fritz said after the match, “It’s great, obviously playing for Team USA. The crowd tonight was great in Delray. I love being here, and we needed this win, so it feels great to deliver for the team.”
Spain and Australia Set for Saturday
Spain will face Denmark in Marbella, while Australia will play Belgium at home. Both matches are scheduled for Saturday, marking the second day of qualifying. The results from these ties will determine which teams join Italy in the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna.
Italy, as the host nation, has automatically secured a place in the Final 8. The remaining seven winners from this weekend’s qualifying matches will join them.
Key Takeaways from Day One
After the first day of Davis Cup qualifiers, France, Argentina, Germany, and Austria are in strong positions to progress. France holds a commanding 2-0 lead over Croatia, Argentina has taken control against the Netherlands, Germany leads Japan, and Austria is ahead in Hungary.
The results highlight strong individual performances from debutants like Corentin Moutet and experienced players such as Arthur Rinderknech and Jan-Lennard Struff. These early leads give these nations a strong chance to compete in the prestigious Final 8 later this year.
Importance of Doubles Matches
For teams that have taken a 2-0 lead, the doubles matches on the second day become crucial. Even if one singles player loses, winning the doubles can secure the overall tie and the place in the Final 8. Teams will need to stay focused and coordinate well, as the Davis Cup format demands depth and strategy across all players.
Saturday will be a decisive day in these Davis Cup qualifying ties. Teams that are trailing will need perfect performances to stay in contention, while leaders will aim to finish their ties quickly. The upcoming matches will determine which nations join Italy in the Final 8 and continue the fight for Davis Cup glory.
