Pandas Depart France as One Fights Illness, Headed Back to China

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Two giant pandas residing at Beauval Zoo in central France are returning to China due to one being diagnosed with kidney failure. Huan Huan, the female panda, along with her partner Yuan Zi, arrived at the zoo in 2012 as part of China’s “panda diplomacy” effort, which shares pandas with international zoos as a representation of friendship and cultural exchange.

At 17 years old, both pandas were originally anticipated to stay in France until January 2027. However, due to Huan Huan’s health challenges, they will be sent back sooner. The pandas will be taken to the Chengdu panda sanctuary, where they'll enjoy their retirement. They departed on a Tuesday, with hundreds of visitors bidding farewell in an emotional scene.

In spite of the chilly, rainy weather, over 200 fans gathered to say goodbye. Among them was a couple from Bordeaux who wore panda-themed outfits, expressing they had visited the pandas more than a thousand times since their arrival.

These pandas achieved fame as the first in France to produce three cubs, bringing happiness to many and enhancing the zoo's popularity, which attracted nearly two million visitors in 2023. The eldest cub, Yuan Meng, returned to China earlier this year, while the younger twins, Yuandudu and Huanlili, will continue their stay at Beauval for now.

The zoo director mentioned that kidney disease is common in older pandas such as Huan Huan. Despite the sadness from her illness, there's hope to extend panda presence at the zoo beyond 2027, in collaboration with China.

The pandas have created significant bonds with both their caretakers and the public. One panda keeper reflected on their time together, highlighting the unforgettable experience of witnessing the first panda birth in France.

While giant pandas are no longer classified as “endangered,” they maintain a “vulnerable” status globally. Only about 20 zoos outside of China exhibit pandas, which remain vital cultural and diplomatic icons for China.

The practice of “panda diplomacy” by China dates back to 1972, when pandas were gifted to the United States following President Nixon's historic visit. These pandas have served as ambassadors of goodwill, strengthening international relations worldwide.
