27 Casualties Reported in Gaza as Ceasefire Holds Amid Strikes

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On Wednesday, Israeli airstrikes resulted in 27 casualties in Gaza, according to reports from Palestinian officials. This incident marks one of the most severe flare-ups since a ceasefire came into effect last month. Both Israel and Hamas have accused one another of breaching the delicate truce.

The Gaza Civil Defence agency reported that 14 individuals lost their lives in northern Gaza City, while another 13 were killed in Khan Yunis to the south. This count was corroborated by two local hospitals. Israel countered that the strikes were directed at Hamas militants who had fired upon areas where Israeli troops were stationed in the south, describing their actions as a breach of the ceasefire. In response, Hamas rejected these claims, labeling the strikes a “dangerous escalation” that endangers the fragile agreement.

As a result of the attacks, panic ensued among civilians. Ahraf Abu Sultan, 50, returned to Gaza City after being displaced for a year, only to find himself amidst new bombings. “We just repaired one room in our destroyed house to find some stability, and now the bombing has started again. We can't catch our breath,” he expressed. Another resident, Nivine Ahmed, described the panic: “We heard explosions and saw smoke. People fled, and ambulances took away the casualties.”

The ceasefire, mostly maintained since October 10, is part of a US-brokered agreement that also facilitated the return of the last 48 hostages held by militants. While living hostages were released, the remains of three hostages still lie in Gaza. The second phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace initiative, which involves disarming Hamas, establishing a transitional authority, and deploying an international stabilization force, remains unexecuted. Although the UN Security Council has endorsed Trump's plan, Hamas has dismissed it for not satisfying Palestinian political and humanitarian needs.

These renewed hostilities follow the devastating October 7, 2023 attack, which left 1,221 Israelis dead, while Israel’s retaliatory measures have so far claimed at least 69,513 lives in Gaza.

In addition to operations in Gaza, Israel also conducted strikes targeting Hezbollah's weapons storage facilities in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military stated that Hezbollah, with support from Iran, is attempting to rebuild its military capabilities. These strikes happened despite a ceasefire in Lebanon established last November, following a deadly attack the prior day in a Palestinian refugee camp that resulted in 13 fatalities—the deadliest incident in Lebanon since the truce.

On the same day, top Israeli leaders paid a visit to troops stationed in a Syrian buffer zone. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to their continued presence as “crucial for Israel's security,” while Damascus condemned the visit, terming it a “serious violation of Syria's sovereignty.”

These recent assaults underscore the ongoing tensions in the region and the precarious nature of ceasefires, with civilians in both Gaza and Lebanon suffering the consequences of military actions while the quest for a sustainable peace remains elusive.
