GCC Secretary-General Meets Lebanese Minister At UN Assembly

GCC Secretary-General Meets Lebanese Minister At UN Assembly

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi met with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji on Monday in New York. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where world leaders gather each year to discuss global issues. The discussion between the two officials focused on the relationship between the GCC and Lebanon, as well as regional and international matters that affect both sides.

Strengthening GCC-Lebanon Relations

One of the main topics of the meeting was the relationship between the GCC countries and Lebanon. Both leaders agreed that these ties are important for the benefit of their peoples. They spoke about how cooperation could be improved in different areas, including political, economic, and social development. Strengthening these ties would not only help Lebanon recover from its current difficulties but also create new opportunities for mutual growth between the Gulf states and Lebanon.

Positive Developments In Lebanon

Albudaiwi and Rajji reviewed some of the positive changes happening in Lebanon. These developments are aimed at improving living standards and bringing more stability to the country. Although Lebanon still faces many challenges such as economic hardship and political divisions, the leaders agreed that progress is being made. They expressed hope that these efforts will lead to greater prosperity and security for the Lebanese people, who have long endured years of instability.

GCC’s Firm Support For Lebanon

The GCC Secretary-General assured Lebanon of the council’s strong support. He said the GCC stands firmly with Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, and security. The Gulf countries have always maintained a brotherly relationship with Lebanon, and Albudaiwi emphasized that this commitment will continue. He also noted that the GCC will support Lebanon’s reform process and efforts to rebuild state institutions. This backing is important for Lebanon as it works to restore trust in its government and overcome its crises.

Importance Of International Agreements

Another important part of the meeting was the discussion about international agreements and resolutions concerning Lebanon. Albudaiwi highlighted the need for full implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution 1701. This resolution calls for a permanent ceasefire and respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty. He also mentioned the Taif Agreement, which was signed in 1989 to end the Lebanese civil war and restructure the political system. Implementing these commitments, he said, is essential for Lebanon to achieve lasting stability and peace.

Ensuring Lebanon’s Sovereignty

The GCC leader made it clear that Lebanon must have full control over its territory and borders. This means the Lebanese government should extend its authority across the whole country without interference. Full sovereignty is necessary to protect Lebanon’s territorial integrity, political independence, and security within its internationally recognized borders. Albudaiwi explained that this step will also help meet the aspirations of the Lebanese people for a more stable and prosperous future.

The meeting ended on a hopeful note, with both sides agreeing on the importance of working together for Lebanon’s future. Albudaiwi expressed confidence that, with GCC support and international cooperation, Lebanon could overcome its current challenges. He stressed that the people of Lebanon deserve peace, security, and prosperity after years of difficulty. The conversation at the UN Assembly reflected the shared commitment of the GCC and Lebanon to building a strong partnership that serves the interests of both sides and promotes stability in the wider region.
