Jasem Albudaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), addressed the British Parliament yesterday in London. He spoke before lords, senior officials, experts, and legislators, highlighting the long-standing cooperation and trust between the Gulf states and the United Kingdom. Albudaiwi expressed optimism for the future, noting that shared interests and converging values form a strong foundation for continued partnership between the two regions.
At the start of his speech, Albudaiwi extended sincere thanks to Lord McNicol, Member of the House of Lords and UK Trade Envoy to Jordan, Kuwait, and the Palestinian Territories. He appreciated Lord McNicol’s efforts in fostering closer relations between the GCC and the UK. The Secretary-General emphasized that such support and warm reception reflect the enduring goodwill and collaboration between the two sides.
Albudaiwi explained that relations between the GCC and the UK have evolved beyond traditional cooperation. Today, the partnership covers political coordination, security and defense cooperation, cultural exchanges, and strong economic and investment ties. This comprehensive approach underscores the multifaceted nature of Gulf-British relations, moving from basic diplomacy to a strategic collaboration benefiting both regions.
The Secretary-General highlighted the strategic importance of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between the GCC and the UK. He noted that discussions have reached advanced stages due to the shared commitment and will of both parties. Albudaiwi described the completion of the FTA as a major step toward opening broader horizons for trade, investment, and innovation, particularly in clean energy, modern technology, and digital services.
Albudaiwi explained that the FTA will help link the developmental transformations in GCC countries with the UK’s global economic capabilities. This partnership is expected to boost trade, attract investment, and foster innovation in sectors vital to both regions. He stressed that the agreement would strengthen long-term economic growth while providing mutual benefits for businesses and governments.
The Secretary-General stressed that the Gulf-British partnership extends beyond economics. It is also based on shared principles, including dialogue, respect for international law, and joint actions for security and stability. The collaboration includes efforts to combat extremism, promote peace, and support global development. This principle-based partnership, Albudaiwi said, ensures a balanced approach to regional and global challenges.
Albudaiwi concluded by reaffirming the GCC’s commitment to deepening relations with the UK. He expressed hope for expanded cooperation across multiple fields, emphasizing the importance of strong ties in building a sustainable and secure future. He highlighted that both regions are well-positioned to achieve significant progress through shared vision, coordinated efforts, and mutual respect.
