GCC Secretary General Jasem Al-Budaiwi met with the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Peter Kyle, and Minister of State for Trade Affairs, Chris Bryant, to discuss the latest developments in the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the UK. The meeting focused on reviewing the progress made so far and identifying ways to accelerate the talks to reach a final agreement that would strengthen economic cooperation between the two sides.
During the meeting, Al-Budaiwi emphasized the importance of intensifying joint efforts to resolve the remaining issues in the negotiation process. He noted that both parties should continue working closely to align their viewpoints and ensure that the final agreement meets the interests of all involved. He also highlighted the strong and long-standing relationship between the GCC and the United Kingdom, saying that a successful trade agreement would mark a new chapter in their economic partnership.
Al-Budaiwi stressed that the GCC-UK Free Trade Agreement would play a key role in enhancing trade and investment flows between the two regions. It would help reduce trade barriers, simplify customs procedures, and promote the exchange of goods, services, and technology. Such an agreement would also encourage private sector participation, creating new business opportunities and jobs across both the Gulf and the United Kingdom. He pointed out that this step aligns with the GCC’s broader vision of diversifying its economy and building sustainable partnerships with leading global markets.
Both sides agreed that the FTA would open new horizons for cooperation beyond trade and investment. The partnership is expected to support collaboration in fields such as renewable energy, digital innovation, education, and healthcare. The UK’s expertise in technology and innovation, combined with the GCC’s financial strength and strategic location, would make this cooperation mutually beneficial. The two sides also discussed ways to ensure that the agreement supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and encourages greater innovation and knowledge sharing.
The meeting concluded with optimism about the progress achieved so far and the willingness from both sides to finalize the deal soon. Al-Budaiwi reaffirmed the GCC’s commitment to continuing dialogue and cooperation with the UK to reach a balanced and comprehensive trade agreement that benefits both regions. The GCC and the UK see this partnership as an important step toward greater economic integration, shared prosperity, and a stronger global presence.
