Glen Powell Says New Football Series ‘Chad Powers’ Is a Game-Changer

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Actor Glen Powell, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, is excited about his latest project, the sports comedy series “Chad Powers”. The Hulu series, which arrives this Tuesday, brings a fresh perspective to college football storytelling, combining humor, drama, and a journey of personal redemption.

Filling a Gap in Television

Powell explained that he has always looked for gaps in the entertainment world. “I always try to look for where the gaps in an audience are, where the gaps in the marketplace are,” he said. He felt there was little representation of college football in television, despite its popularity among fans.

“As a fan of college football, I’ve never seen a show that embodies the spirit and environment of the sport,” Powell added. The series aims to capture the energy, camaraderie, and competitive spirit of college football while offering viewers a story that is both entertaining and relatable.

The Story of Chad Powers

The series follows Powell’s character, Russell Holliday, a disgraced college football player who disguises himself as a Southern rookie walk-on player named Chad Powers. This premise was inspired by a 2022 ESPN sketch featuring real-life football player Eli Manning playing the fictional Chad Powers.

Chad Powers is not just a football story—it is about personal growth, mistakes, and redemption. According to series co-creator Michael Waldron, known for Rick and Morty and Loki, Russell is a flawed man who has made serious mistakes. The world dislikes him, and he even struggles to forgive himself.

“His only way out isn’t to fix himself right away or forgive himself immediately. He decides to reinvent himself as Chad Powers, and through that process, he gets closer to forgiving the real Russ Holliday,” Waldron said. The series shows that self-discovery and redemption are rarely easy, especially when under public scrutiny.

Authentic Football Experience

One of the strengths of Chad Powers is its authenticity. Powell shared that working with Eli Manning and Payton Manning helped make the football scenes realistic. “They were so available to us throughout this whole process, which is like a gift,” he said.

Powell also emphasized that the show is designed to appeal to all kinds of football fans. “We wanted this to be a cinematic, badass football show that everyone who loves college football, professional football, or is just curious about it can recognize as real,” he explained. The combination of humor, drama, and genuine football action sets Chad Powers apart from other sports series.

Supporting Cast and Production

The show features an impressive cast, including Steve Zahn, Toby Huss, Perry Mattfeld, Clayne Crawford, and Wynn Everett. Their performances bring depth and personality to a story that balances comedy, sports action, and personal challenges.

The production team paid close attention to detail, ensuring that the football environment, the team interactions, and the game sequences feel authentic and engaging. Fans will notice the effort put into every aspect, from stadium scenes to locker room dynamics.

A Fresh Take on Sports Stories

Chad Powers is not just for die-hard football fans. By blending comedy, heartfelt moments, and sports action, the series appeals to a broad audience. It explores themes of identity, second chances, and self-improvement while staying true to the excitement of college football.

Powell’s initiative to co-create a show that fills a gap in sports storytelling highlights a new trend in television: combining niche interests with universal themes. Chad Powers demonstrates how sports series can entertain, inspire, and resonate with viewers of all ages.
