New York, Nov 19, 2025: Maurizio Cattelan's provocative artwork, a fully functional solid gold toilet dubbed “America”, drew a remarkable $12.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction held in New York on Tuesday, marking its significance within the lexicon of contemporary art. This event coincided with Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer, which broke records, bringing in a staggering $236 million, thus setting a new benchmark in the market for modern art.
The 101-kilogram (223-pound) 18-karat gold toilet began bidding at $10 million, swiftly catching attention with its bold commentary on affluence and societal excess. Cattelan, renowned for pushing artistic boundaries with installations like his banana, noted “America” as a critical observation of extreme wealth. He famously stated, “Whether you dine on a $200 meal or a $2 hot dog, the end result is toilet-related,” underlining the artwork’s provocative yet humorous social critique.
Sotheby’s characterized the piece as “a potent critique of the intersection between art production and market valuation,” acknowledging art's dual roles as both cultural expression and valuable commodity. Previously owned by a private collector, this is one of two such pieces created by Cattelan in 2016, with the other having been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum and controversially offered to former President Donald Trump while seeking a Van Gogh painting loan.
The backstory of this artwork is captivating; an earlier version was stolen from a display at Blenheim Palace in England, Winston Churchill’s birthplace. Although two individuals were charged related to the theft, the ultimate fate of the stolen toilet is still uncertain, with speculation it may have been melted down.
The auctioning of “America” followed weeks of public display at Sotheby’s New York headquarters, drawing attention from art lovers, collectors, and critics alike prior to the bidding process. This phenomenal sale emphasizes a growing trend toward high-stakes, contentious art pieces gaining worldwide recognition and fostering dialogue about satire, opulence, and social reflection in the art world.
Cattelan’s works habitually ignite discussion, showcasing that his art transcends mere aesthetics, urging reflections on society, consumer behavior, and the extremes of wealth. With “America” now with a private owner, it’s poised to make waves in the headlines for years.
This auction, alongside Klimt’s landmark portrait, highlights Sotheby’s New York as a leading platform for significant art sales, where historical masterpieces and modern provocations converge in an auction landscape increasingly driven by eye-catching declarations and remarkable valuations.
