In an exciting start to the Players Era men’s championship, No. 12 Gonzaga claimed a 95-85 victory over No. 8 Alabama on Monday night in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs exhibited great dynamism both offensively and defensively, demonstrating their capacity for a well-rounded team effort.
Graham Ike showcased an impressive display, contributing 21 points and 11 rebounds. His strength in the paint and timely scoring were crucial for Gonzaga, especially during moments when Alabama mounted scoring runs. Alongside him, Tyon Grant-Foster also scored 21 points, providing critical energy and momentum for the Bulldogs when it mattered most.
Braden Huff was another key player, adding 18 points and shooting a remarkable 9-of-12 from the field. His proficiency near the basket allowed Gonzaga to sustain control of the game, particularly when their scoring momentarily slowed. Steele Venters chipped in with 12 points, all from impactful 3-pointers, while Mario Saint-Supery contributed 10 points, hitting 10-of-11 free throws and facilitating six assists.
Alabama's offense also shone, led by Labaron Philon Jr. who recorded 29 points and seven assists. His push of the pace kept the Crimson Tide competitive throughout the game, supported by Amari Allen and Aiden Sherrell with 14 points each, along with Aden Holloway's 13 points.
The game remained close for much of the night, with both teams exchanging leads. Alabama briefly surged ahead following a significant 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from London Jemison. However, Gonzaga responded confidently, regaining control with sharp shooting and tactical inside play.
A pivotal moment came near the end of the contest when Grant-Foster executed a spectacular alley-oop dunk from Ike, leveling the score at 71. Moments later, he hustled on defense to secure a steal, leading to another fastbreak dunk which helped ignite an 11-0 run that ultimately shifted the game’s momentum. Grant-Foster concluded that run with two free throws, widening their lead to 86-74.
Critical rebounding was a cornerstone of Gonzaga’s victory, with the Bulldogs snagging 48 rebounds against Alabama's 36, generating 25 second-chance points. Their relentless pursuit of extra possessions proved crucial in a tightly contested match.
Gonzaga also showcased dominance inside, outscoring Alabama 52-42 in the paint. Adam Miller, who was quiet in the first half, contributed seven points early in the second half, including a key 3-pointer that increased Gonzaga's lead to 60-51.
With Alabama fighting back to briefly take the lead at 71-69 on a corner 3-pointer from Holloway, Gonzaga managed to regain and maintain their advantage thereafter.
As the tournament progresses, Gonzaga will next face Maryland on Tuesday, while Alabama prepares to meet UNLV.
Through effective scoring, robust defense, and team synergy, Gonzaga firmly established their position as one of the top contenders in the tournament.
