London: Gopichand P. Hinduja, the long-time chairman of the global Hinduja Group, has died in London. He was 85.
Known in business circles as 'GP', he was the second of four Hinduja brothers who built a major family-run conglomerate. His elder brother Srichand passed away in 2023; brothers Prakash and Ashok remain active in the group's businesses.
Gopichand joined the family enterprise in 1950 and helped expand it from an Indo–Middle East trading concern into a diversified international group operating across 11 sectors, including automotive, banking and finance, IT, healthcare, energy, real estate and media.
A graduate of Jai Hind College in Mumbai, he received honorary doctorates from the University of Westminster and Richmond College in recognition of his business achievements and philanthropic work.
Under his stewardship, the Hinduja Group came to represent Indian entrepreneurship on the international stage, with flagship companies such as Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank and NXTDIGITAL Limited among its holdings.
The Sunday Times Rich List 2025 recently ranked the Hinduja family as the wealthiest in the UK, estimating their combined net worth at £32.3 billion.
The family also endured a public legal dispute in 2021 over succession and control, with Gopichand and his brothers citing a 2013 family agreement that affirmed a collective ownership approach: "everything belongs to everyone and nothing belongs to anyone."
Gopichand P. Hinduja's death marks the close of a defining chapter for a prominent global business dynasty; he is remembered for his strategic vision, commitment to family values and role in elevating Indian industry worldwide.
