A 16-year-old from Halifax has been charged with child sexual abuse and the possession of materials related to child exploitation, with court proceedings now adjourned until January to give the defense time to examine extensive evidence.
Authorities allege that the teenager was part of an online extremist group called 764, which manipulates minors into self-harm and engages them in sexual acts on video. Investigators believe he may have interacted with hundreds of youths globally.
Recently, the Canadian federal government classified 764 and other related organizations as terrorist entities. Prosecutors are currently evaluating the implications of this new designation on the ongoing case, while reasserting the principle of the teen's presumption of innocence.
The court has also updated the teen’s conditions for release. He is now barred from using internet-capable devices, but will retain limited access to a basic cellphone for communicating with his legal representative.
Officials have issued a warning that although such incidents are infrequent, the rise of digital networks may lead to a proliferation of similar cases in the future. The teenager is set to return to court in January to enter a plea.
