Five individuals, including four executives from a Russian military manufacturer, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Dagestan, as confirmed by officials. The incident occurred on November 7 near the Caspian Sea, involving a Ka-226 helicopter with employees from the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, which is under EU sanctions.
Social media footage captured the moment the helicopter tried to land on a beach, but its tail hit a rock, leading to the rear rotor detaching. The aircraft lost stability and collided with a vacant private residence in the village of Achi-Su, igniting a fire that engulfed the beach property. Emergency services hurried to the scene to control the flames, which left the house in ruins.
The Kizlyar Plant identified four of its personnel among the deceased, including Achalo Magomedov, the deputy general director for construction and transport support. A flight mechanic for the Ka-226 also perished in the incident, while two more individuals suffered injuries.
Initial investigations suggest that a "technical malfunction" precipitated the crash, with no signs of sabotage or human negligence. Russia's federal aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, designated the incident a "disaster" and will take part in the formal inquiry.
The Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant has been under EU sanctions since 2024 for its role in manufacturing military aircraft equipment utilized by Russian forces. The company specializes in systems for aircraft ground control, diagnostics, as well as various onboard equipment, including the DZ-UM lock, a bomb rack for the SU-25 fighter jets widely employed in operations in Ukraine.
Authorities have intensified their investigation into the crash, concentrating on the mechanical failure that caused the rotor's detachment, which led to this catastrophic event. This incident has sparked renewed discussions on aviation safety standards and the risks associated with operations tied to defense contractors in Russia.
