In a landmark diplomatic occasion, President Donald Trump hosted Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday, making it the first official visit by a Syrian leader since Syria's independence from France in 1946. This meeting is part of a wider US initiative to integrate Syria into a global coalition aimed at combating the Islamic State group.
Al-Sharaa, the former rebel leader who ousted ex-President Bashar Assad last December, has served as the interim president since January. The US has lifted longstanding sanctions against Syria as part of this diplomatic engagement, fostering closer military and strategic partnerships.
Trump and al-Sharaa initially met in May in Saudi Arabia, where Trump praised him as a “strong past, very strong past” fighter. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that this visit highlights the president’s dedication to global diplomacy and building relationships with international leaders to pursue peace.
The agenda for al-Sharaa is clear: lift sanctions that were imposed due to human rights violations under the Assad government. While the US has temporarily waived certain Caesar Act sanctions, any permanent relief would necessitate congressional action. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Lindsey Graham have proposed options that range from unconditional to conditional removal of sanctions, each carrying substantial ramifications for US-Syria economic and strategic links.
Experts indicate that involving Syria in the US-led coalition against the Islamic State could enhance regional security initiatives. The emergent Syrian military, alongside the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, has already been engaged in the northeast countering extremist factions.
Mouaz Moustafa, the executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force, pointed out that abolishing sanctions could pave the way for international investments and aid in stabilizing Syria’s post-conflict landscape, though he cautioned that conditional sanctions would hinder economic growth.
As this historic encounter unfolds, the Trump administration is making strides in rebuilding diplomatic and strategic ties with Syria, indicating a new era in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
