Death Toll in Hong Kong Fire Reaches 128 as Search Efforts Continue

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Hong Kong has updated the death toll from its most catastrophic fire in nearly 80 years to 128, while approximately 200 individuals are still unaccounted for following a massive blaze at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po. Officials confirmed on Friday that while rescue operations have concluded, searches for the missing continue as families await news.

The fire ignited on Wednesday afternoon within the eight-tower estate, housing more than 4,600 residents. With the entire structure enveloped in bamboo scaffolding and protective mesh due to ongoing renovations, the flames swiftly spread across many towers. This tragedy now stands as Hong Kong’s deadliest fire since 1948.

Reports indicate that at least 79 individuals sustained injuries, including 12 firefighters, with one remaining in serious condition as medical personnel continue urgent treatment. Rescuers faced intense difficulties from thick smoke, extreme heat, and collapsing scaffolding as they battled through the night to reach those trapped on higher floors.

Authorities disclosed that fire alarms in the buildings malfunctioned during the incident. Three officials from the contracting firm involved in the renovation were arrested on manslaughter charges for employing hazardous, flammable materials, including foam boards that obstructed windows and exacerbated the fire's spread.

Families are frantically searching for missing loved ones. Outside one makeshift shelter, a distraught mother clutched her daughter's graduation photo as she awaited word. "She and her father are still unaccounted for," she said, tears streaming down her face as she recounted the moment firefighters lost control of the blaze. "They didn't have enough water to save our building."

Most victims were located in two towers, although firefighters managed to rescue survivors from other blocks. The Indonesian consulate confirmed that two of the deceased were Indonesian domestic workers. Hong Kong hosts nearly 368,000 domestic helpers from lower-income Asian countries, many residing in the high-rises where they work.

This tragedy has drawn parallels to the Grenfell Tower fire in London, which claimed 72 lives in 2017, with both incidents prompting scrutiny of building materials, safety protocols, and governmental oversight. A police raid occurred at Prestige Construction’s office, which had been overseeing maintenance for over a year, during which officers seized documents and electronic devices as part of an ongoing investigation.

In the wake of the disaster, Hong Kong’s government announced a HK$300 million relief fund to assist those affected. Several major Chinese corporations have also promised donations. Discussions are resurfacing within the government regarding the replacement of traditional bamboo scaffolding with metal structures to enhance site safety.

As darkness fell on the second day following the fire, many evacuees opted to sleep in a nearby mall rather than official shelters, aiming to leave space for families in greater need. People bundled themselves in blankets and created makeshift beds outside restaurants and convenience stores. Volunteers provided food, water, toiletries, and warm clothing to those in need.

Hong Kong, characterized by its dense high-rise neighborhoods and exorbitant property rates, has drawn enduring criticism regarding living standards and urban safety. The scale of this tragedy has intensified public outcry and may amplify frustrations with authorities already under scrutiny for enforcing stricter political and national security measures.

Both the Hong Kong government and China’s central leadership have moved rapidly to express concern, indicating their serious consideration of the disaster and its potential implications for public trust.
