IDF Discovers 7km Hamas Tunnel Linked to Lt. Goldin's Remains

IDF Discovers 7km Hamas Tunnel Linked to Lt. Goldin's Remains

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have uncovered a significant Hamas tunnel in the Gaza Strip, where the remains of Lieutenant Hadar Goldin were stored for an extended duration. Lt. Goldin was killed in 2014 during a conflict in Gaza, and earlier this month, his remains were finally returned to Israel, easing a prolonged period of mourning for his loved ones and the nation.

A video released by the IDF showcased the tunnel, which extends beneath the highly populated Rafah area. It traverses various facilities, including a United Nations compound, mosques, clinics, and kindergartens, highlighting the intricate conditions under which Hamas operates. The military asserts that this tunnel was utilized by Hamas leaders for weapon storage, attack planning, and as a hiding place underground.

This 7-kilometer tunnel, reaching depths of up to 25 meters, features 80 distinct rooms, many serving as command centers for senior Hamas figures, such as Muhammad Shabana, who died alongside Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar in May 2025. This significant discovery was made by Israel’s elite Yahalom engineering unit and Shayetet 13 naval forces.

In a related operation, the IDF apprehended Marwan Al-Hams, a Hamas operative connected to Lt. Goldin’s death, believed to have knowledge of Goldin's burial site in the “White-Crowned” tunnel in Rafah. The retrieval of Goldin's remains was part of several clandestine operations conducted over six months.

This tunnel revelation comes amid renewed hostilities in Gaza, which escalated following the Hamas attack on southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in significant civilian casualties and hostages. Israel's military response has led to considerable Palestinian fatalities.

Recent airstrikes in Khan Younis and other locations have caused additional loss of life and injuries, intensifying the ongoing conflict as both Israel and Hamas have leveled accusations against each other regarding breaches of a fragile ceasefire.

The IDF reiterated its commitment to discovering such tunnels and retrieving fallen soldiers' bodies as part of its broader mission to safeguard Israeli citizens and mitigate future threats. The unveiling of this extensive tunnel underscores the operational methods utilized by Hamas, often situated in civilian-heavy areas, thereby perpetuating ongoing security challenges in Gaza.

Experts caution that tunnels of this nature not only have military implications but also threaten the civilian populace residing above them. The IDF's ongoing efforts to identify and neutralize these threats highlight the strategic necessity of addressing such dangers in conflict environments.
