Tragic California Crash Involves Illegal Indian Truck Driver Jashanpreet Singh

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

California, October 24, 2025 – Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old truck driver from Yuba City, California, who hails from Punjab, India, is facing severe charges following a tragic crash that resulted in three fatalities and left four others injured on a freeway in Southern California. U.S. Homeland Security confirmed that Singh illegally crossed the southern border into the U.S. in 2022.

The White House has strongly condemned California for issuing a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to Singh, highlighting it as part of a worrying trend involving illegal immigrants acquiring such licenses. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “This man entered the United States illegally in 2022 and has now caused a devastating accident that killed three individuals. California granted him a CDL despite this record.”

Details of the Crash

The tragic incident occurred on October 22 when Singh, reportedly under the influence of drugs, crashed his semi-truck into several vehicles on the freeway. Dashcam footage revealed his truck striking a small white SUV in the center lane before colliding with additional trucks and cars across multiple lanes, ultimately crashing into a disabled truck parked on the shoulder.

Singh is now facing three counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence, in addition to charges of causing injuries to four others. He was apprehended and is currently jailed, with an arraignment scheduled for Friday. Authorities have indicated that Singh has not yet secured legal counsel.

White House Response and CDL Crackdown

This incident has escalated the Trump administration's agenda to limit noncitizens from holding commercial driver’s licenses. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stressed that newly enacted rules are aimed at preventing similar tragedies. “These individuals deserve justice, and there will be repercussions,” Duffy affirmed, reinforcing the administration's ongoing initiative to curb illegal immigrant access to commercial licenses.

Leavitt mentioned that ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has filed a separate hold for Singh. She pointed out that this situation exemplifies a “disturbing pattern” where criminal illegal aliens are granted CDLs in the U.S. The White House has reproached California for not adhering to federal standards concerning licenses for noncitizens.

California’s Defense

The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom defended the state’s actions, asserting that Singh had federal employment authorization, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver’s license. They maintained that California's issuance of the CDL was in line with federal law.

Background on Singh

Originally from Punjab, India, Singh entered the U.S. illegally in 2022 and obtained a commercial driver’s license that allowed him to operate a semi-truck. Authorities allege that he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the fatal crash, leading to an accident that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

The White House and the Department of Transportation have stepped up measures to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining commercial driver’s licenses, pointing to multiple incidents involving crashes caused by noncitizen drivers. This latest accident has reignited discussions on state versus federal responsibilities regarding the issuance of CDLs to noncitizens.
