IMCTC Teaches Media to Stop Extremist Content Online

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) launched its new program titled “Analysis of Extremist Discourse and Hate Speech in Digital Media: Smart Countering Tools and Technologies” in Malé, the Maldives. The program brings together 30 trainees from media and academic institutions to strengthen skills in countering extremism while promoting moderation and tolerance. Deputy Minister of Defense Fathimath Mizna Ali and several civilian and military officials attended the launch.

Objective of the Program

The training aims to equip journalists and media practitioners with essential skills to analyze digital content, understand extremist and hate speech, and counter it professionally. The initiative emphasizes accurate content analysis, source verification, and use of modern digital tools. It also raises awareness about the psychological and social impact of extremist discourse, empowering participants to produce responsible analytical reports.

Focus on Modern Digital Tools and Techniques

The program covers several integrated themes. Participants learn to understand the structure and motives behind extremist content, use digital and technical tools for media analysis, and apply smart confrontation techniques. Best practices for curbing hate speech online are shared, including awareness campaigns and impactful media initiatives.

Target Audience and Broader Goals

Journalists, academics, and professionals across civil and media sectors are the primary participants. The program is designed to enhance their professional capacity in addressing digital extremism and fostering a responsible, positive media discourse. By building expertise in countering extremist content, the initiative contributes to broader social and intellectual security.

Importance of Media in Combating Extremism

IMCTC’s program highlights the central role media plays in shaping public perception and promoting social stability. Proper training ensures that media professionals can detect, analyze, and respond to harmful content effectively, creating a safer online environment.

Through this initiative, IMCTC strengthens regional efforts to combat digital extremism and hate speech. The program equips participants with modern tools, analytical techniques, and professional skills, ensuring the media remains a force for responsible reporting, moderation, and social security in the Maldives and beyond.
