The Indian aviation industry faces challenges as new pilot safety regulations roll out, causing significant interruptions for IndiGo, the nation's largest airline. These new measures, aimed at curtailing pilot fatigue, were introduced this year in two stages, with the latest phase commencing on November 1, 2025. IndiGo acknowledged it failed to adequately organize its schedules to align with the new guidelines, resulting in extensive delays and operational disruptions throughout India.
One of the primary objectives of these regulations is to provide pilots with increased rest periods and restrict night flying, thereby ensuring higher alertness and safety during flights. The key rules include:
Weekly Pilot Rest: The required weekly rest for pilots has been extended from 36 hours to 48 hours to facilitate adequate recovery from extended working hours. Despite the current challenges, this rule is firmly in place.
Maximum Night Landings: The limit on weekly night landings has been decreased from six to two. Given that night hours span from midnight to early morning, when alertness typically dips, this rule aims to reduce flying risks during these critical periods. However, the government has granted a temporary exemption from this rule for IndiGo until February 10, 2026, to assist the airline in managing its schedules.
Flight Duty Restrictions: Pilots are now permitted to operate flights for a maximum of 10 hours during night hours. Similar to the night landing limitation, this restriction is also on temporary hold for IndiGo until February 10 to avoid further operational disruptions.
Rest Time and Leave: Personal leave taken by pilots does not count towards the obligatory 48-hour rest period, ensuring pilots receive their full rest time on top of any leave. To facilitate ongoing travel operations, all airlines are currently exempt from this stipulation.
These new regulations, first suggested in early 2024, came about after research indicated that fatigue is a critical factor in pilot errors and accidents. Authorities believe that improving rest conditions and curtailing night shifts will enhance passenger safety in Indian air travel.
IndiGo's abrupt struggle with these regulations highlighted deficiencies in their scheduling and readiness. Analysts suggest that other airlines may also require schedule adjustments to comply with the new rules. While temporary relief has been offered to mitigate chaos, the aviation industry must ultimately embrace these changes in the months ahead.
Over time, these initiatives are expected to bolster aviation safety in India. Passengers may face temporary disruptions, but these rules aim to avert accidents and ensure pilots are well-rested and alert for every flight.
