A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Sumatra Island in Indonesia on Wednesday, exacerbating the nation’s current battle against severe floods and landslides. The quake struck close to Aceh province at a depth of 10 kilometres, with no tsunami threat detected. So far, there have been no reported casualties or damage from the earthquake.
Indonesia resides on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” positioning it as a hotspot for seismic activity. This tremor occurred during a tumultuous period for the region, still reeling from heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Senyar, which recently impacted the area.
North Sumatra, heavily affected by flash floods, has recorded at least 28 fatalities, with many individuals reported missing. Rescue operations are underway, hampered by damaged roads and persistent downpours that hinder access to affected communities.
In the wake of relentless rainfall over the past two days, rivers in North Sumatra surged, unleashing mud, rocks, and debris into multiple locales. Homes have been inundated, prompting evacuations to higher land. In Central Tapanuli, landslides have devastated several residences, while nearly 2,000 homes were affected by flooding. Furthermore, in South Tapanuli, fallen trees have tragically taken the lives of eight individuals. Authorities have moved over 2,800 people to temporary shelters for safety.
With Indonesia typically experiencing heavy rains from October to March, the risk of flooding and landslides remains high, leaving millions in flood-prone and hillside regions at risk.
The government and local agencies are actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts, while residents are advised to remain vigilant for any weather updates and potential aftershocks.
