Jakarta – An explosion at a mosque located within a high school in Jakarta injured a significant number of individuals during Friday prayers. The blast occurred around 12:15 local time (05:15 GMT) in the Kelapa Gading district, causing distress in the local community.
Jakarta police chief Asep Edi Suheri reported that 54 individuals were treated at hospitals for various injuries, including burns. Of these, three were in critical condition, while 17 sustained minor injuries. Several others received on-site medical attention before being released.
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police initiated an investigation swiftly, deploying a bomb disposal unit to assess the high school complex. Security teams cordoned off the area, with military personnel stationed at the entrance. Early reports indicated two items resembling guns were found, with one appearing to be a submachine gun linked to the 2019 Christchurch attack through marked references.
However, a government representative later clarified that these items were identified as toy guns, asking the public to refrain from jumping to terrorism-related conclusions until further investigation is completed. A dark green gun cartridge belt was also found at the site.
According to preliminary information from a student, there are suspicions that a homemade bomb might have been brought to the mosque by a student who had faced bullying, although this remains unverified by authorities.
Indonesia, known for having the largest Muslim population globally, has heightened security at public religious sites following the incident. Ongoing investigations will explore the device's origin and the motives behind the explosion.
Authorities are advising the public to stay calm while security teams continue thorough inspections to ensure safety for students and worshippers.
