A concerning report has sparked global alarm regarding the treatment of Palestinians detained during the Gaza conflict, with a rights organization revealing that at least 98 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since hostilities began in October 2023. The report, made public on Monday, reveals claims of extensive torture, dire conditions, and serious medical negligence, leading to calls for an immediate international inquiry.
Entitled “Death Sentence for Palestinians in Custody,” the document details that 46 detainees perished in facilities managed by the Israel Prison Service, while 52 others, all originating from Gaza, died under military custody. The rights group argues that these figures indicate systemic breakdowns in the treatment of detainees during one of the area's most turbulent episodes.
The researchers behind the report assert they gathered accounts from freed detainees, healthcare professionals, and various sources to highlight what they term as intentional cruelty and inhumane treatment. Numerous detainees reportedly experienced severe physical abuse, prolonged stress poses, inadequate nutrition, and denial of essential medical assistance. Alarmingly, some individuals who were in sound health at the time of arrest purportedly died shortly after their detention began.
Allegations within the report describe conditions that amount to “state-sanctioned abuse,” involving overcrowded holding cells, extreme temperatures, and deprivation of basic human necessities. The organization contends that these practices violate international humanitarian principles and warrant independent review.
Characterizing the situation as “profoundly alarming,” the organization has urged worldwide authorities, human rights organizations, and international legal bodies to conduct a transparent and independent investigation into these deaths. They emphasized that without outside examination, the true extent of the mistreatment may remain concealed.
These deaths occur amidst ongoing war in Gaza, escalating tensions throughout the region, with thousands currently detained in Israel due to heightened security measures. Advocacy groups, families of detainees, and many international observers have increasingly expressed concern regarding the conditions within prisons and military detention facilities in recent months.
Human rights specialists caution that the rising death toll could further complicate diplomatic initiatives in the region, amplifying calls for accountability and stronger safeguards for detainees. With no signs of resolution in the conflict, the pressure on Israeli authorities to address these allegations and allow external oversight is expected to intensify.
The report sheds light on a profoundly troubling pattern—one that underscores the rights and lives of Palestinian detainees amidst an expanding international discourse.
