Reza Amiri Moghadam, Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan, has expressed admiration for Pakistan’s diplomatic strategies in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States. He remarked that a “positive stride” is emerging towards a potential peace agreement, coinciding with increased diplomatic engagements aimed at easing ongoing tensions in the Middle East following prolonged periods of unrest.
The ambassador made these comments via social media after Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi concluded talks in Tehran with high-ranking Iranian officials. As per Moghadam, Pakistan's mediation has fostered a sense of cautious optimism regarding the future dialogues between Tehran and Washington. He emphasized that the continuation of progress hinges on the US's commitment to the diplomatic route and adherence to the discussions at hand.
Moghadam also acknowledged the contributions of Pakistani leaders such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Army Chief Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, noting that their “sincere efforts” can pave the way for long-lasting peace and stability in the area.
Recently, Pakistan has positioned itself as a crucial mediator amidst the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. Reports indicate that Islamabad has facilitated backchannel conversations, playing a vital role in sustaining negotiations during this delicate ceasefire. Pakistani officials insist their primary objective is to avert a larger regional conflict and to restore diplomatic dialogues between Tehran and Washington.
These peace discussions are also related to initiatives aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a pivotal route for global oil shipping, which has encountered significant interruptions owing to military tensions and naval activities in the Gulf. Former US President Donald Trump claimed that a prospective agreement with Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz were “largely negotiated,” notwithstanding some unresolved issues still in the pipeline.
While progress is evident, significant disputes linger between both nations. Iran has reportedly sought sanctions relief, security assurances, and acknowledgment of its regional issues, whereas the United States advocates for restrictions surrounding Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. Iranian officials have reiterated that trust must be rebuilt, especially after years of hostilities and military confrontations.
International observers suggest that Pakistan’s involvement has been instrumental in maintaining open lines of communication during these challenging times. Additional support for the diplomatic initiatives is coming from regional players such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, all intent on steering clear of another major confrontation in the Middle East. Analysts argue that any fruitful agreement between Iran and the United States could significantly bolster regional security, stabilize global oil markets, and lessen tensions across the Gulf.
